Description

Our 2023 Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay presents a radiant pale gold color with hints of green at the rim. The nose is expressive, offering a harmonious blend of ripe green apple, Meyer lemon, and juicy pear, complemented by toasted almond and a touch of wet stone minerality. Subtle hints of white peach and honeysuckle emerge, with a gentle touch of vanilla and baking spice from aging in French oak barrels (10% new). On the palate, the wine is vibrant, with a rich, round texture balanced by crisp acidity. Flavors of citrus curd, ripe apricot, and golden apple unfold, accented by a saline minerality and a hint of butterscotch. 225 cases made.

We named our Chardonnay “Xiang Si” 相思, which means to think about the ones you care for and love. We wanted to dedicate this wine to our families and friends who have been guiding and supporting us along this challenging yet exciting journey.

The 2022 Chardonnay reminds me a little of the 2020. It's a bit on the ripe and showy side, more voluptuous than the 2021. Although the alcohol is higher than in 2021, it carries it nicely. The flavors tend to the more golden end of the spectrum, befitting the warm late season. Hints of toasty oak and beeswax (this seems to be a hallmark of the Shunyi style of Chardonnay) add a bit of class to the wine. My guess is that it will be an early maturing vintage, especially enjoyable in its youth.
